Nearly 20 monkeys that escaped from a research and breeding facility in South Carolina were still on the loose as of Monday, Nov. 11, days after the initial escape.

Alpha Genesis CEO Greg Westergaard said the 25 recovered monkeys were all “in good health.”

The monkeys were just a few yards from the Alpha Genesis facility — located on Castle Hall Road near US-21 — over the weekend, officials said. The primates were reportedly jumping back and forth over the property’s fence.

Yemassee police said they’d been working with Alpha Genesis staff to search for the animals after they were reported missing last week. People were asked to avoid the area because the animals are skittish, and “any additional noise or movement could hinder their safe capture,” police said.

“Residents are urged to keep their doors and windows securely closed and to report any sightings immediately by dialing 911,” police said last week. “Please do not attempt to approach these animals under any circumstances.”
