Rep. David Rouzer, a Republican representing North Carolina’s 7th Congressional District, unveiled the legislation on Monday, January 13. While the full text of the bill was not available at the time of writing, its title is “To provide for the elimination of the Department of Education, and for other purposes.”

Rouzer, who has been in office since the 2014 midterm elections, has consistently pushed similar bills during each term he has served. Congressional records indicate that he introduced comparable legislation in 2015, 2017, 2019, 2021, and 2023, but none of those bills advanced beyond being referred to the House Committee on Education and Workforce.

In a statement to local news station WECT, Rouzer reiterated his belief that education should be managed at the state and local levels, free from federal interference. He argued that eliminating the Department of Education would redirect its funding back to the states, where it could be used for priorities like increasing teacher pay, building new schools, or addressing other state-specific educational needs.

Rouzer’s latest push to dismantle the department comes just days before President-elect Donald Trump returns to the White House. During his campaign, Trump was vocal in his criticism of the Department of Education, advocating for its dissolution as part of his broader push to reduce federal government involvement in education.
