Firefighters across North and South Carolina scrambled to contain more than 175 wildfires that erupted over the weekend, fueled by dry conditions and strong winds. The blazes forced evacuations in some areas as officials worked to protect homes and contain the flames.

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster declared a state of emergency on Sunday as wildfires spread across more than 4,200 acres in the state.

The largest fire in South Carolina ignited in the Carolina Forest area, just 10 miles west of Myrtle Beach. By Sunday evening, it had scorched 1,600 acres and was only 30% contained, according to the South Carolina Forestry Commission.

In North Carolina, the most significant wildfire burned approximately 400 acres in Uwharrie National Forest, located 50 miles east of Charlotte. Fire crews reported progress, with containment reaching one-third by Sunday afternoon.

Meanwhile, a separate blaze in the Blue Ridge Mountains, about 40 miles south of Asheville, remained out of control. The brush fire, covering between 400 and 500 acres, was at 0% containment as of Sunday, according to the North Carolina Forest Service.

Firefighters continue to battle the flames, hoping for favorable weather conditions to aid containment efforts.
